No, it's too late

While driving back from the bbq well past their bedtime, the kids kept asking if they could do different things once we got home, e.g. "Can we play?", "Can we watch a movie?". To these comments I repeatedly replied something to the effect of, "No, it's too late. Once we get home, you'll take a bath, brush your teeth, and head right to bed."

L, then J, began repeating to themselves the questions they had asked me, answering each one with, "No, it's too late." In light of the fact that they were already up late, the Q&A by L I found most amusing was, "Can we stay up? No, it's too late."
